Thank you for visiting my portfolio website.
My name is Lauren W. Wilder - I am a Candidate in the Art & Design Graduate program at NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
This website is a work in progress - please check back periodically for updates!
My journey as a maker began as soon as I was able to hold a crayon. My mother and grandmother helped foster my creativity as a young girl and I pursued the arts throughout my high school and undergraduate education. I attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and studied studio art with a concentration in painting and printmaking. I enjoyed exploring the possibilities of color and mark making in these mediums but always felt a longing to reconnect to my family history in quilting and sewing.
When I graduated in 2011, I pursued other career paths outside of the arts, but continued to keep a sketchbook and discovered Spoonflower.com, an online repeat pattern community, and began teaching myself how to create digital repeat patterns that I could use in my sewing projects. This is when I discovered the exciting relationship between art, design and fibers.
My desire in pursuing a Master's in Art + Design: Fibers + Surface Design is to gain a greater knowledge of fibers so that I can translate my artwork into the medium that I feel most passionate about and that we use in our everyday lives. I would like my work to be functional and also purposeful. As I grow in my understanding of design principles, it is my hope that my work will gain deeper meaning that will speak strongly in our contemporary context.
